Celebrate Valentunes with CAB
Posted on Tuesday, February 12, 2013
The Campus Activities Board will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, Feb. 15, with a Valentunes concert, featuring the campus a cappella groups Perfect Third and the Hobartones, along with headliner Dakaboom.
Dakaboom, an edgy music-driven comedy duo consisting of Ben McLain and Paul Peglar, combines the musical genres of pop, hip-hop, opera, jazz, musical theatre, electronica and a cappella to modernize and reinvent the vaudeville art form. As a valentine's treat, CAB will provide a chocolate fondue bar at the concert, which will run from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Vandervort Room of the Scandling Campus Center.
Jessie Marullo, program coordinator of the Student Activities Office, says CAB members saw Dakaboom perform at the northeast National Association of Campus Activities conference last October and absolutely loved their act. Every fall, Marullo explains, Student Activities takes four members of CAB to this conference. Students attend sessions on planning and managing events and also watch singers, comedians, and other acts perform 10-minute teasers.
Later, conference attendees get to talk to the groups and book those they like the best. In this system, regional colleges can book the same groups in the same block of time, saving on costs.
Ben McLain, who has appeared on "General Hospital," the longest running daytime drama, records and tours with the electronic vocal band Sonos, featured on the final season of NBC's "The Sing-off." Paul Peglar, who appeared on the TV show "Glee" as the original piano player during the first season, works extensively with internet stars Chester See and Lana McKissack and is currently the Music Director of Middle School Summer Sessions at The American School in Switzerland.
Last year, Dakaboom debuted its first album, titled "Get Awesome." This year, they are touring the country promoting the new DVD: "Live in Los Angeles." They recently hosted the Los Angeles A Cappella Festival at USC.
