The William Smith College swimming and diving team finished second out of seven teams at the Skidmore College Invitational this afternoon. Senior Heidi Gordon led the Herons with a victory and two second place finishes.
William Smith posted a team score of 365, trailing only SUNY New Paltz's 578. Liberty League rival Vassar was third at 328.5, followed by the host Thoroughbreds (310.5), Sarah Lawrence (58), Bard (13), and SUNY Cobleskill (3). The Herons have finished first or second in each of their past five appearances at the Skidmore Invitational.
Gordon won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.93. Senior Katie Stebbins tied for fifth place, touching in a 1:15.6.
Four Herons finished in the top seven of the 100 butterfly. Gordon was second (1:03.55) just 0.61 seconds behind the winner. Sophomore Samantha Burnett tied for third place (1:04.93), first-year Brooke Adams was fifth (1:05.04) and first-year Cece Carsky-Bush was seventh (1:05.5).
In the 50 fly, Gordon was also the runner-up with a time of 28.42, just 0.02 seconds behind the winner. Burnett was fifth (28.74) and Adams seventh (29.22).
Gordon also swam with first-year Kate Mendez, Adams, and senior Casey Sherwin in the 200 medley relay, taking third with a time of 1:59.83. William Smith's B relay was fifth (2:02.52) thanks to the efforts of junior Mimi Mahoney, Stebbins, Carsky-Bush, and senior Amanda Woods.
Sherwin logged a pair of third place showings. She recorded a time of 1:04.69 in the 100 backstroke, just 0.09 seconds behind the winner. Mendez was seventh in 1:06.46. Sherwin was also third in the 50 free, touching in at 26.25.
First-year Sarah Litt also posted a third place finish, notching a time of 5:01.16 in the 400 individual medley.
On the 1-meter diving board, senior Emily Kellogg was fourth (154.0) and first-year Morgan Onorato was fifth (151.0). On the 3-meter board, Kellogg took sixth (150.75).
The Herons also got top seven finishes in the 100 freestyle (senior Lauren Morosky, 4th, 59.58), 50 backstroke (Sherwin, 4th, 30.76), the 200 free relay (Burnett, Morosky, Woods, and sophomore Leah Jacob, 4th, 1:48.23), the 500 free (sophomore Christine Rhoads, 5th, 5:38.97), and the 100 IM (Adams, 5th, 1:07.69 and Rhoads, 6th, 1:08.19).
William Smith will return to the pool Feb. 20-23, when the Herons compete in the UNYSCSA Championship Meet at Ithaca.
