On Monday, Jan. 28, the Hobart College Athletic Department's Napier Leadership Seminar will feature activist and former Syracuse University All-American quarterback Don McPherson. His presentation will begin at 8 p.m. in Albright Auditorium.
The event is free and open to the public.
At SU, McPherson earned All-America honors after serving as a captain of the Orange's 1987 undefeated football team. The MVP of the Sugar Bowl set 22 school records and was the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy balloting. McPherson's position coach at Syracuse was the late Bill Maxwell, who served as Hobart's Head Football Coach from 1991 through 1994.
McPherson went on to play seven seasons of professional football in the NFL and the CFL. In 2008, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
McPherson has conducted hundreds of workshops and lectures at colleges and universities across the country. According to his website, donaldmcpherson.com, his presentation, "You Throw Like A Girl-The Value of Respect," addresses the language men use "that sets a standard on the narrow expectations of masculinity while simultaneously establishing an understanding that girls and women are "less than" men. The presentation focuses on nurturing positive language and understanding of masculine identity."
In addition to speaking on subjects aimed at college students, McPherson also speaks on a variety of topics from creating positive team work to overcoming adversity, to work-life balance, to gender issues and more. He has appeared on the Opera Winfrey Show as well as numerous news programs.
Established in 1996, the Napier Leadership Seminar is a life skills program that hones the skills of Hobart's athletes and coaches enabling them to achieve their potential and perform at high levels in the classrooms, athletic arenas and in their personal lives. The Napier Leadership Seminar is designed to develop, challenge and support the athletes and coaches in their on-going pursuit of excellence.
The Napier Leadership Seminar honors the late William J. Napier '57. As a director of Hobart's athletic support foundation, the Statesmen Athletic Association, Napier fully understood and promoted the value and the importance of intercollegiate athletics in the education of Hobart men. The generosity of the Napier family continues to make this seminar possible and Hobart Athletics is deeply grateful for their sustained loyalty.
