Junior forward Richie Bonney scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Hobart College basketball team to a 74-59 victory over Hartwick College in Bristol Gym on Sunday, December 30. The final game of 2012 evened the Statesmen's record at 4-4. The Hawks slip to 6-4.

Hobart led for nearly the entire contest. Hartwick scored the first basket of the game for a 2-0 lead that lasted 26 seconds and grabbed an 18-17 lead with just under six minutes left in the first half to lead for the final time, for just 16 seconds. The Statesmen shot 47.2 percent from the floor while limiting the Hawks to 40.3 percent shooting. Hobart made more free throws (18) than Hartwick attempted (16) and the Statesmen enjoyed a 38-32 rebounding advantage.

After junior forward Kyle Bradley's layup gave the visitors their final lead of the day, Hobart scored the next five points and closed the half on a 15-6 run for a 32-24 lead at the break.

The Statesmen opened the second half with a 16-7 run to stretch their advantage to 16 points. First-year forward Cole Smothers fueled the surge with 10 of his season-high matching 14 points on the day. He also blocked a game-high three shots. Hobart finished with eight blocks, the most since rejecting 11 against Clarkson on Feb. 1, 2008.

Bonney was one point off his career-high after shooting 11-of-15 from the floor, including a 3-pointer. He pulled down eight rebounds, handed out two assists, made two steals and blocked a shot. Senior guard Stefan Thompson gave the Statesmen three players in double figures, finishing with 10 points and a game-high eight assists. Senior forward Sean Peer paced Hobart on the glass, pulling down a game-high 11 boards.

Bradley enjoyed a fine all-around performance for the Hawks, scoring a team-high 24 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and a game-high four steals. Junior forward Jared Suderley added a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 4, when the Statesmen open conference play at Rensselaer. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Hartwick will visit Nazareth on the same day for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
