Samuel '13 Interns in Fashion

Posted on Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Shane Samuel '13 has an eye for fashion.

In addition to his experience interning with GQ magazine over winter break 2011, he is also the founder of a smart, stylish blog, "Men in Style Society." And his "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" story includes three high-profile fashion internships in New York City.

The Jamaica, Queens, native spent the summer working and learning at PR Consulting, a top fashion PR firm; Bed|Stü, a leather goods designer; and BPMW Agency, a men's fashion PR firm. "I was invited to return to GQ for the summer, but ultimately I decided to explore other parts of the fashion industry," he explains.

At PR Consulting, Samuel experienced the fast-paced world of fashion public relations. He worked with the Versace, Versus and Christopher Kane accounts, managing samples and putting together editorial and retail reports.

"They represent a lot of big names, so it was exciting to work there," says the political science and writing and rhetoric double major. "After my experience at GQ, it was interesting to see the fashion world from the other side of the edit desk."

During his days with Bed | Stü, Samuel found himself working on look book campaigns, maintaining the showroom and managing samples. "I started working with Bed | Stü through my blog, and it blossomed into an internship opportunity," he says. "It's such a fun, laidback environment, but I learned a lot."

Samuel perhaps learned most from his brief internship with BPMW Agency, where he helped with set up, break down and vendor management at one of the agency's fashion and lifestyle trade shows, Capsule New York Mens. "It was a fast-paced experience," he says of the four days in July. "A lot of effort went into the work, but when we were done, it was all worth it."

While working Capsule, Samuel met several influential figures and made connections with two men he calls his mentors. "I met Micah Cohen, founder of Shades of Grey, as well as Sean Hotchkiss '06, who writes for GQ Eye, the magazine's blog," he says. "They've both been great about staying in touch and answering my questions."

Next semester, Samuel will study abroad with the HWS program in London. While there, he hopes his experiences this past summer will help him land an internship with GQ London. "But even more important than gaining experience and making connections, I was proud to be able to represent HWS in a positive way this summer."

On campus, Samuel is a member of the Budget Allocation Committee, the Caribbean Student Association and is the house manager and founder of the Domestic Violence Awareness House. He is working to reintroduce the Boiling Point series, designed to give students a safe place to discuss their opinions. Samuel works on campus in the Office of Communications as a student photographer.
