Zhong '13 to Work at DFS

Posted on Friday, October 26, 2012

Although midterms have only just begun on the HWS campus, Congjing Zhong ’13 has already landed a job with DFS Galleria following her graduation from the Colleges in the spring.

Zhong, who served as an intern with the company as a product sales manager and a team lead, will begin her tenure as a management trainee in Hong Kong.

In her new position, Zhong will learn the inner workings of DFS Galleria in a more in-depth manner. DFS is the world’s foremost luxury retailer, and caters to international travelers through each of its four divisions - beauty, luxury, fashion and spirits. The one-on-one development program includes intensive coaching and mentoring, and will afford Zhong the opportunity to participate in the DFS Shared Learning Experience, a training program for the company’s top leaders.

“My new role in DFS is very challenging, but also exciting; creativity and passion are always needed,” says Zhong, an economics and environmental studies double major. “I expect to gain more information about store operation and the essence of motivation in work. As an effective manager, one must understand and be able to maximize oneself - as well as the performance of one’s team.”

Zhong looks forward to her year at the company’s homebase in Hong Kong. Throughout her training, Zhong will also become familiar with several areas of the company, completing projects and learning as much as possible about the worlds of sales, operations, merchandising and management.

“Working in Hong Kong will certainly broaden my international business and management experiences. DFS focuses on the international traveler, so I will learn a lot about marketing to clients and maintaining relations with frequent travelers,” explains Zhong. “Also, Hong Kong is the perfect combination of Western and Eastern culture.”

Zhong first became familiar with DFS after speaking with the company’s CEO Edward Brennan P’06, P’10 during one of his regular visits to campus. Following her year of intensive training, Zhong hopes to become a manager.

On campus, Zhong serves as a teaching fellow for the economics department and is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international economics honor society. She has worked on campus for two summers conducting research with Assistant Professor of Economics Darrin Magee, spent time as a volunteer with Geneva Heroes and serves on the Student Advisory Board of Centennial Center for Leadership. Zhong is currently studying abroad in Copenhagen.
