Janey Decker Miller '90

Boulder, Colo.

Vice President, Octagon Olympics and Action Sports

One of the most successful and experienced agents in the Olympic Movement, and recognized as one of the most influential women in the sports marketing industry, Janey Decker Miller '90 has used her creative marketing insights, her business expertise, and her contract negotiation skills to help shape the careers of some of the biggest stars in both summer and winter sports.

"Initially it was a love of sports and advertising that drew me to sports marketing," says Miller, who majored history and played on the William Smith basketball team. "As I got more deeply into the sports industry, it was the Olympic athletes that truly captivated my attention and inspired my career. Every Olympic athlete with whom I have ever worked with has taught me something important about life, dedication, hard work, accountability, humility and sacrifice."

After starting her career in sports marketing with Advantage International, Miller joined a boutique marketing firm focused on Olympic athletes, known as Gold Medal Management. From there, she was hired as the director of olympic sports at IMG Worldwide, one of the largest talent representation firms in the world, and later started her own successful sports marketing firm, Janey Miller Management, Inc. (JMM).  JMM was acquired by Octagon in 2007 and Miller has been in her current role at Octagon ever since. During her career, she has helped manage and market many of the stars and legends of various U.S. Olympic Teams.

Octagon Olympics and Action Sports, a division of the Octagon global sports, sets the standard for athlete marketing by helping athletes achieve their goals on and off their respective fields of play, from traditional endorsement deals to developing and managing press, public relations, and sponsorship opportunities tailored to each athlete's individual professional and philanthropic goals. Octagon represents a diverse range of today's most decorated Olympians, including swimmer Michael Phelps, speed-skater Apolo Ohno and gymnast Aly Raisman, as well as action sports stars like skier Lindsey Van, skateboarder Andy Macdonald and surfer Ry Craike.

"My career has been incredibly rewarding because I've been so fortunate to surround myself not just with amazing and impressive athletes but with athletes of amazing and impressive character," Miller says. "They are all world class athletes who could have pursued easier paths, yet each one has devoted an extraordinary amount of time, sacrifice, and pain, without any guaranty of any financial security, let alone 'success.'"

Throughout her 18-year career in sports marketing and talent management, Miller has devoted her energy and talents to promoting and developing Olympic athletes, including Michael Johnson, Natalie Coughlin, Dominique Moceanu, Dan O'Brien, Cammi Granato, Amy Van Dyken, Picabo Street, Nathan Adrian, Jessica Long, and Apolo Ohno, among many others.  Throughout her career, she has earned a reputation as one of the industry's most creative negotiators of sponsorship and endorsement contracts, and she is credited with having structured many of the most lucrative athlete contracts in numerous deal categories.

"The most rewarding aspect of my career are those moments when I have helped deliver some of that financial success to the athletes who have worked so hard for so long without ever asking for anything," Miller says. "Being able to partner with corporate sponsors to use those athletes' talents, struggles, determination, and triumphs to inspire people from all over the world is what makes this work consequential and so personally fulfilling."

Miller has been recognized by Sports Business Journal as one of the top women in sports and has spearheaded multiple national and international athlete campaigns with Fortune 500 companies including Coca-Cola, Visa, Nike, Sprint, Tag Heuer, Omega, BP, McDonald's, Speedo and General Mills among others. In addition, she has secured numerous primetime television and broadcasting deals and negotiated exclusive literary and speaking opportunities for her clients.
