Galway at night

Day 1: Friday, April 27, 2018

You should plan to arrive at Shannon airport which is near Limerick in the West of Ireland, meet the group, board the bus at 9:00 am and “hit the ground running” as we travel through County Clare to the Cliffs of Moher. We will then visit Caherconnell, a ring fort, where we will be given a talk by Michelle Comber, who is an archeologist at NUI Galway and has been supervising an archeological field school at this site for several years. While there we have lunch and view a sheep dog demonstration. We will then proceed through the Burren in County Clare pointing out some ancient sites and then travel along Galway Bay to arrive at our hotel in Galway in County Clare in the late afternoon. We will have an early welcome dinner and the night is yours to catch up on sleep or explore Galway. We will be staying at hotels in the center of the cities we visit so you can easily walk out at night to explore on your own.


NUI Galway

Day 2: Saturday, April 28, 2018

The group will meet at the hotel and walk to NUI Galway (about 15 minutes) for a lecture given by Professor Laurence Marley from the history department at NUI Galway on the history of Ireland. Pat will then give a talk on the Irish economic history. We will go downtown for lunch on your own and then meet our guide, Peadar O’Dowd, who is a retired professor of archeology from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, who will give us a wonderful tour of Galway “The City of the Tribes” after which you are on your own.

Day 3: Sunday, April 29, 2018

The group will board the bus to drive through Connemara (the area to the west of Galway City) to Rossaveal to catch the ferry to Killronan on Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands. We will be met by our guide and travel in vans to visit sites along the way to Dun Aonghasa, a magnificent ring fort on the edge of a cliff. The vans will bring us back to Kilronan where there are shops and pubs to await the ferry back to Connemara and Galway.


Ross-Errilly, County Galway

Day 4: Monday, April 30, 2018

The group will depart our hotel for Westport in County Mayo stopping at Ross Errilly a ruin of a 15th century Franciscan monastery which is almost perfectly preserved except for the roof. We then stop at Cong and the Ashford Castle where the movie “The Quiet Man” was filmed. From there we go to Leenane to see the only fjord in Ireland. We drive through the countryside of Mayo stopping at a few places of interest until we reach Westport where you will have the evening to yourself to explore this interesting town.

Day 5: Tuesday, May 1, 2018

We leave from Westport for Sligo and along the way we will visit a churchyard which has an example of a round tower. We will stop at the Foxford Woolen Mills and at Carrowmore to take a guided tour of this megalithic cemetery. We will then check into our hotel and the evening is yours.

Day 6: Wednesday, May 2, 2018

The bus will leave Sligo for our trip to Derry which is in Northern Ireland and thus uses Northern Ireland pounds instead of Euros. Along the way, we will make a stop in Drumcliff to see William Butler Yeats’ grave” under Benbulben”. We will drive along the breathtaking coast of County Sligo . There will be a stop at a court cairn called Crevvykeel and then on to Derry which is a completely walled city. We will meet our guide for a tour of the walls of Derry and the Bogside. There will be a group dinner at the hotel.

Day 7: Thursday, May 3, 2018

A busy day for the group as we depart Derry for the Antrim Coast (Northern Ireland) where we will visit Dunluce Castle, the Giant’s Causeway and the Bushmills Distillery where we will take a tour and tasting. From there we will go to Belfast where we will check into a hotel in the city center and you are on your own for the evening.

Day 8: Friday, May 4, 2018

We will tour Belfast in the morning and drive to Dublin, visit the Guinness Brewery and then check into the hotel where we will have our last dinner together as a group. You are on your own after dinner to explore Dublin.

Day 9: Saturday, May 5, 2018

We will take an historical tour of Dublin in the morning making sure you get to see The Book of Kells and the highlights of the city and after the tour which will last a few hours, you are on your own to explore the capital city of Ireland.

Day 10: Sunday, May 6, 2018

We will board a bus to take you to the Dublin Airport for your return to the States.
