Janet Seeley Performing Arts Scholarship for Dance

The Janet Seeley Performing Arts scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate refined understanding of dance based on an in-person audition, video, and personal statement. The HWS Arts faculty will evaluate each portfolio and audition and arts scholarships will be awarded based on their recommendations. Awards range from $3,000 to $20,000. If a student receives any other merit designation than the arts scholarship award will be $3,000.

  • If you are an Early Decision I candidate, your portfolio needs to be submitted by November 15th and attend the November auditions.
  • If you are an Early Decision 2 candidate, your portfolio needs to be submitted by January 15th and attend the November auditions.
  • If you are a regular decision candidate, your portfolio will be due by February 1st and can attend the November or February auditions.

Recommendation
Please submit a Letter of Recommendation from a private instructor or teacher in the specific art form you are applying for that can speak to your abilities. If you used a recommendation from a private instructor or teacher on your common app, you may also use it here.

Media
Students must submit a video of them no more than 10 minutes in length. The video material may be submitted via URL link (i.e. You Tube, Vimeo, etc.) or via upload.

Essay
Please submit a 500-600 word essay that describes how dance has influenced you as a person, artist, and scholar. Additionally, please address how you envision dance informing your life in college or connecting with other academic interests.

Auditions
To register for your in-person audition, please contact the office of Admissions at (315) 781-3622 or admissions@hws.edu.

Auditions will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, 3:00-6:00 p.m. and Friday, February 16, 2018, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Both the November and February auditions are Open Auditions and will include a full technique class in classical ballet and contemporary dance forms, performance of a short solo of any dance genre (1-3 minutes), and a gathering with current arts scholars and dance faculty. Applicants may choose Choreography or Performance as the focus of their audition. The solo performance must be of your own choreography only if applying for the Choreography scholarship.

PLEASE NOTE: If applicants are unable to attend the audition, they are encouraged to arrange an equivalent audition experience so they can demonstrate their skills in person. Please contact Donna Davenport (davenport@hws.edu) to set up an individual audition.
