From the fall of 2002 through the spring of 2009, 158 Jumpstart Geneva AmeriCorps members dedicated 45,400 hours of service to three community partners, directly impacting 168 children and indirectly impacting well over 550 children and their families. The researcher served as a Jumpstart corps member during the 2008-2009, Jumpstart’s final year in Geneva due to the economic downturn which forced Jumpstart to close 13 of the 68 sites across the country. As a Geneva native, the researcher hoped to draw from her Jumpstart experience and recreate a project that would pair caring college students with disadvantaged youth. The researcher distributed surveys to Geneva Garden apartment residents and sought ways to secure a vibrant partnership between HWS students and children residing in the complex.
