OFF-CAMPUS STUDY

Whether it's interning in London, studying in India or doing research in Germany, most Hobart and William Smith students will have had some kind of international learning experience before they graduate.

With some planning, Asian Studies majors and minors can travel abroad and still graduate on time. While the Center for Global Education offers abroad programs on six continents, faculty from the Asian Studies department sponsor programs in China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

China

Beijing or Nanjing, China, or Taipei, Taiwan

The China/Taiwan program provides students the opportunity to study in one of three sites on mainland China or Taiwan: Beijing, Nanjing or Taipei. Each site has a distinct academic focus and will give students a different perspective on Chinese society. Students participating in this program will study at some of China's most prestigious universities, improve their Mandarin Chinese language skills, and gain an understanding of contemporary China or Taiwan.

Lingnan, Hong Kong

The Lingnan University exchange program seeks to provide students with quality education distinguished by the best liberal arts traditions from both East and West. It adopts a whole-person approach to education, teaching students to think, judge, care and act responsibly in the constantly changing circumstances of life in Hong Kong, the region and the world. The university is officially "bilingual" with the majority of classes offered in English to both its international and Chinese students.

India

Jaipur, India

The semester in India is designed to utilize field settings and important sites to introduce students to India in its varied manifestations - the richness of its history, philosophy, and culture; the diversity of its peoples and languages; the complexity of its economic, social and political processes. The program involves academic work and travel throughout India, starting in Delhi, the national capital, moving on to Mussoorie in the Himalayan foothills for intensive Hindi instruction, then to Jaipur in the desert state of Rajasthan for about half the term and finally to Varanasi (Benares) on the banks of the River Ganges.

Japan

Hikone, Japan

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are an affiliate member of the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) in Hikone, Japan, which offers a program in contemporary Japanese language and culture every fall semester. The JCMU complex, located on Lake Biwa, includes classrooms, a library, state-of-the-art language labs, and a traditional Japanese tea room.

Tokyo, Japan

A special two-week educational tour offered every June. Technos College/Tanaka Educational Trust in Tokyo - an affiliate trust organization with which Hobart and William Smith have had a longstanding relationship - host two HWS students and one faculty member for an expenses-paid study visit.

South Korea

Seoul, Korea

In the Yonsei University exchange program, students may choose from more than 60 courses taught in English by the international undergraduate division. Native speakers of Korean are also welcome to elect other courses offered by the university provided that reading and writing skills are at an appropriate level. In addition to the many cultural and social opportunities available to HWS students on the Yonsei campus, the university offers optional international buddy and host family programs to facilitate integration into the local community.

Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan, or Beijing or Nanjing, China

The China/Taiwan program provides students the opportunity to study in one of three sites on mainland China or Taiwan: Beijing, Nanjing or Taipei. Each site has a distinct academic focus and will give students a different perspective on Chinese society. Students participating in this program will study at some of China's most prestigious universities, improve their Mandarin Chinese language skills, and gain an understanding of contemporary China or Taiwan.

Vietnam

Hanoi, Vietnam

One of the first semester-long study abroad opportunities in Vietnam, the HWS program in Hanoi, Vietnam enables students to explore an ancient Asian civilization which is undergoing a dramatic process of transition and modernization. Students will begin intensive Vietnamese language instruction in Ho Chi Minh City upon their arrival in Vietnam, continuing under the direction of faculty from Vietnam National University in Hanoi.
