ORIENTATION 2009 : MEET THE ORIENTATION STAFF

Hobart and William Smith Colleges have an experienced and dedicated staff that directs first year student programming. As you review the material on our Web site, please contact the following students and staff members to get the answers to your questions. Below is some brief information about those HWS community members that you are likely to speak to either before or after you arrive on campus.

OLsFrancesca Antonucci '10 and Chris Bramwell '11 are our Orientation Coordinators. They help plan and oversee nearly every aspect of your Orientation experience, working many hours to ensure that every facet of your Orientation program is ready to go when you arrive in August.

Francesca, from Florida, is currently majoring in public policy with a minor in education. With her sense of leadership, she plans to teach and then hopes to become a lobbyist for educational reform. She is also the promotional director of the Colleges' radio station, WEOS, and is involved in editing for the Herald. Last semester, she participated in the study abroad program to India.

Chris, from Kentucky, is a member of the Hobart football team, a resident assistant for Durfee Hall and is a member of the inaugural class in the Leadership Certificate Program. He is tentatively majoring in writing with a minor in economics. Last summer, he worked for the Secretary of State in Hartford, Conn.

DeansAll first-year students will receive a warm reception and support from Associate Dean of William Smith College Lisa Kaenzig and Assistant Dean of Hobart College David Mapstone '93. If you have any questions about selecting your courses or campus life in general, be sure to contact them. After you arrive on campus, we encourage you to stop by the deans' offices, located on the first floor of Smith Hall.

Kate McCaffrey is the Director of Residential Education and is responsible for the room and board assignments of all first-year students. If you have any questions about room assignments or meal plans, contact her. Her office is located at 101 St. Clair Street, adjacent to Hubbs Health Center.

Katie Flowers is the Associate Director the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning at HWS. Because community engagement is so central to the Hobart and William Smith experience, Katie's office, located on the second floor of the Salisbury Center at Trinity Hall, becomes like a second home to many students.

Every student who enters Hubbs Health Center to receive health treatment and to get some good, practical advice is certain to meet nurse practitioner and Clinical Coordinator Betti Green. Any student with special needs or health care concerns should contact Betti as soon as possible.

Van LoneThe Counseling Center provides free, confidential services for HWS students, including individual and group counseling; walk-in consultations; emergency psychological services; and psycho-educational outreach programming. Students should make an effort to meet center Director Jeff VanLone.

PlinerSilverVannAt the Center for Teaching (CTL) and Learning, Director Susan Pliner, Coordinator of Disability Services David Silver and Coordinator of Student Support Services Sam Vann manage efforts to help all students, including students with disabilities, improve their academic performance. Students receive one-on-one course-specific tutoring and can attend a wide assortment of skill building sessions. Stop in and visit Susan at the Center, which is located in The Learning Commons on the second floor of the Warren Hunting Smith Library.

There is always something happening in the Office of Student Activities, on the second floor of the Scandling Campus Center, and Director Robert Pool is usually right in the middle of it! Student Activities is a great place to get info about joining or starting student clubs and activities scheduled on- or off-campus.

The Colleges coordinate a variety of programs on campus that successfully heighten student awareness to moderation, responsible choice and normative use of alcohol at the Colleges. For more information, please contact David Diana, the Associate Dean of Wellness and Director of Alcohol and Other Drug Programs.
