The house prepared Safe Halloween Kits which included candy, a spider ring, a tattoo, a condom, and information on alcohol and drug abuse. Each bag also included a pledge which the recipient signed saying they would have a safe Halloween. Over 200 bags were given out to HWS students who signed the pledge.

The party occurs twice a year at the Substance Free House and has become a tradition on the HWS campus and in the house. There is always tons of food, upbeat music by live bands, lawn games and lots of root beer. It is a great way to celebrate the beginning and end of the school year since the parties are normally held in September and May.

This event held the weekend before Thanksgiving break, where house members prepared a meal to celebrate Thanksgiving together as a house. Each person brought a dish to pass and the turkey was provided by the AOD office. A great time (and a delicious meal!) was had by all and the event served as a chance for house members to get to know each other.

Before winter break in December, members of the house gathered for a gift exchange. Each person who attended brought a gift, and members of the house drew numbers to decide who would pick first. After the first person picked, the next person could decide to take the previous gift (now knowing what it was) or choose a new gift to unwrap. In the end, everyone who brought a gift left with one!

The house hosted several open houses on a weekly basis. The purpose of the open house was to invite members of the HWS community to the house to get to know the residents and have a quiet, clean and substance free place to play games, watch movies, or do homework on the weekends.

The house hosted a fancy "Mocktail Party" where party guests dressed up in cocktail attire and gathered at the house for mocktails (non-alcoholic drinks), appetizers and desserts prepared by the house. Guests engaged in great conversation, played games and listened to music for the entire evening!
