The department continues to involve students in research. Professor Erika King was invited to speak at the Special Session on New Advances in Graph Theory at the AMS Eastern Sectional Meeting at the Rochester Institute of Technology in September 2012, where she spoke about her summer research in 2010 with alums Trevor Gionet '12 and Yixiao Sha '12. This research resulted in a publication in Discrete Mathematics and, as a result of her presentation, she was asked to write an article for the journal Involve describing their experience. Also, the article "Open-Source Hardware Development" by Josh Davis, Tomas Carvalho y Silva, and Professor John Vaughn appeared in Circuit Cellar, January 2013, issue 270. This article, with two student co-authors, describes the bat house monitoring project begun in CPSC 226.
There have also been several notable student achievements. HWS mathematics students, Kelly Brown, Gen Li, and Ruiting Wang participated in the 75th annual Putnam Mathematics Competition in December 2012. This summer, Nick Schmidt will be doing an internship with Apple in Cupertino and Luke Deluccia will be doing an REU in computer science at the University of Connecticut. Alex Kittelberger will going into a Master's program at Cornell next year.
