ASIANetwork-Luce Foundation Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow

Through the generous support of the ASIANetwork-Luce Foundation Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow Program, Hobart and William Smith Colleges seek to fill a one-year postdoctoral teaching fellow for the 2010-2011 academic year in the field of East Asian social science.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a social science discipline (Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, or Sociology) or an interdisciplinary degree with a particular emphasis on social science. The successful candidate will specialize in East Asia or in a comparative field with a strong emphasis on East Asia. Preference will be given to candidates who are prepared to teach broadly about all aspects of East Asian society and culture. Ethnographic or other in-depth field experience is also desirable. The candidate should have language proficiency for the region or country of his/her expertise.

At HWS, the Fellow will be able to choose from an unusually rich array of curricular options, ranging from formal co-teaching of both interdisciplinary and departmental courses to other more limited forms of collaboration in putting together the equivalent of  a 2 ½ course teaching load for the year. The successful candidate will have significant mentorship and professional opportunities, especially as regards teaching in a liberal arts college. He/she will attend departmental and college faculty meetings, keep office hours, mentor students, and continue to pursue research and/or other scholarly projects. Compensation will be $35,000 and housing will be provided at no cost. ASIANetwork will provide a travel allowance to attend the ASIANetwork annual conference.

Fellows should have earned a doctorate or terminal degree from a North American university within the prior 3 years. Applicants who are ABD may be considered, provided that they have a scheduled completion date prior to the beginning of the fellowship year verified by their graduate advisor.
