Hobart and William Smith Colleges, a selective liberal arts institution located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, seek candidates for a position in teacher education and educational foundations, with an emphasis in elementary education, to begin in the fall of 2008. The position is a two-year appointment, at the rank of assistant professor or instructor, and may be renewable.
The successful candidate will work with students in an innovative field-based teacher education program that leads to certification at the elementary level, in special education and in nearly all academic subjects in secondary schools, as well as in art (K-12). In addition to teaching professional teacher certification seminars on curriculum and instruction and supervising students’ field experiences, the successful candidate will teach liberal arts courses in the philosophical and historical foundations of education, human growth and development, and/or elementary education. An interest in teaching courses in urban, international, or comparative education is also welcomed. He or she will also advise students in the undergraduate teacher certification program and the Colleges’ Master of Arts in Teaching program.
The successful candidate must have Ph.D. or Ed. D. (ABD will be considered) with a strong grounding in the foundations of education, experience teaching in K-12 settings, and a demonstrated ability to teach both pedagogical and liberal arts courses. Experience supervising student teachers and an interest in promoting diversity within the Teacher Education Program are also desirable.
Founded as Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women, Hobart and William Smith Colleges today are a highly selective residential liberal arts institution with a single administration, faculty and curriculum but separate dean’s offices, student governments, athletic programs and traditions. The Colleges are located in a small diverse city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. With an approximate enrollment of 2,000, the Colleges offer 62 different majors and minors from which students choose two areas of concentration, one of which must be an interdisciplinary program. Creative and extensive programs of international study and public service are also at the core of the Colleges’ mission. The Education Department is noted for its field-based teacher education program that is anchored in a liberal arts curriculum and its recently developed MAT Program. The Department also enjoys close relationships with many area school districts, including the Geneva City School District,which has a highly diverse student population, and many rural districts.
