Hobart and William Smith Colleges seek an innovative marketing expert to take a leadership role in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. Reporting to the Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Director of Marketing creates, implements and measures strategic and tactical plans to increase meaningful engagement with key constituencies. Partnering with departments across campus, the Director of Marketing works to raise visibility and enhance brand awareness of the Colleges' academic, institutional and athletic programs.


  • Creates comprehensive marketing plans that support brand initiatives and that have quantifiable objectives, methods, outcomes and timelines.
  • Effectively creates and executes differentiated marketing strategies that drive reputation, and that support the efforts of Admissions, Advancement and Athletics.
  • Develops reports, dashboards and metrics to monitor brand awareness. Oversees web and e-mail analytics.
  • Manages and evaluates market research initiatives and adjusts strategies to meet competitive conditions and market shifts.
  • Identifies, creates and implements distribution tactics that communicate key messages and priorities.
  • Assists the Director of Publications in the management of the Colleges’ graphic identity. Monitors campus-wide compliance with brand guidelines, including in the bookstore and athletics, and ensures brand identities are relevant.
  • Working with the Director of Athletic Communications, develops and implements an overall plan for athletic communications.
  • Writes and creates compelling content for use on the website, social media and in print publications. Responsible for content creation for portions of the HWS website including overseeing academic department pages.
  • Manages the creation and execution of collateral materials as assigned. Creates presentations for the department and Office of the President.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams as assigned.
  • Demonstrates and supports a culture of collaboration, innovation and results-based improvement.


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in marketing, public relations, journalism, English or similar field required. Master's degree or marketing certification preferred.
  • Seven or more years of relevant experience including experience with market research strategies and methodologies.
  • Highly organized and able to manage competing priorities from multiple sources.
  • Approaches work with a sense of urgency while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and exercise excellent judgment.
  • Strong working knowledge of current marketing techniques and best practices, including for the web and social media.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with senior leaders, faculty, staff, students and alums. Experience working effectively with diverse groups.


This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, administrative salaried position. Typical hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some occasional nights and weekends. The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. The benefit package includes but is not limited to: 20 days of vacation each year, 10 paid holidays, sick time, personal days; medical, dental, and vision insurances; long-term disability coverage; life insurance; and retirement benefits. This position is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.

Founded as Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women, Hobart and William Smith Colleges today are a highly selective residential liberal arts institution with a single administration, faculty and curriculum but separate dean’s offices, student governments, athletic programs and traditions.  The Colleges are located in a small diverse city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State.  With an enrollment of approximately 2,000, the Colleges offer 62 different majors and minors from which students choose two areas of concentration, one of which must be an interdisciplinary program.  Creative and extensive programs of international study and public service are also at the core of the Colleges’ mission.
