

Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The Assistant Director, reporting to the Director of the CTL, will implement policy and supervise programs that provide academic support for students of the Colleges. She/he will also be involved in CTL initiatives that provide opportunities for scholarship and professional development among the faculty. We seek an energetic and creative professional who understands the important and innovative role that a learning center can play in interactions among a broad array of campus and community constituencies.
The Center for Teaching and Learning facilitates collaboration among faculty and staff, students, and the community, fostering an environment and culture conducive to best practices and innovation in teaching and learning. We seek always to cultivate intellectual engagement and inquiry, critical thinking, and academic achievement as vital forms of scholarship. The CTL provides a variety of programs and resources students need to succeed in college and beyond, including a Peer Writing Colleagues program, department Teaching Fellows, tutoring, and instruction in organization and study skills. Our Disabilities Services staff provides advice and consultation to students, faculty, and staff and arranges accommodations for students with disabilities. All of our services are available at no charge to all students, regardless of their program of study.
In the next academic year, the Center for Teaching and Learning becomes an integral part of a new Learning Commons. This project, located in specifically designed and newly renovated space brings together Library Services, IT Services, and the CTL. This Learning Commons will enhance collaboration and integration of learning, research, and information technology. The commons will offer venues for formal and informal instruction, individual and group research, and multimedia technology and support in a setting that invites social and intellectual interaction. The successful candidate will bring to this project leadership skills and vision to help create and implement participatory, collaborative processes to transform teaching and learning, as well as the delivery and effective integration of services.
Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director will work to ensure that the Center provides both individual and programmatic support of students' academic efforts.

This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible administrative position, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2008. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
