Assistant William Smith Rowing Coach/Coordinator of Student-Athlete Wellness
Department of William Smith Athletics

SUMMARY:

Assist the head coach in all facets of the William Smith (women's) rowing program, including practice planning, recruiting, conditioning, race management, administrative tasks, leading the novice crew program and other duties as assigned. The Coordinator of Student-Athlete Wellness for William Smith College will oversee all aspects of the Heron Peak Performance Plan which is a comprehensive educational curriculum fostering personal and athletic development through the education and empowerment of women.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coaching:

  • Assist in the planning, teaching and supervising of practices and conditioning sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in sport skill instruction, motivation, and the ability to conduct practice sessions under the direction of the head coach as well as independently with the William Smith novice team.
  • Effectively recruit prospective student-athletes under the direction of the head coach.
  • Adhere to all sport governing, departmental, and institutional rules and policies.
  • Assist the head coach in planning and implementing fund raising programs.
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in the personal, academic and athletic progress of student-athletes.
  • Exhibit supportive and cooperative behavior pursuing sport progr am goals set by the head coach.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability and professional behavior when dealing with student-athletes.
  • Efficiently and effectively complete tasks assigned by the head coach.
  • Accept constructive criticism and work toward consistent professional improvement.

Coordinator of Student-Athlete Wellness:

  • Collaborate with the administrative team of the Department of William Smith Athletics to develop and implement the Heron Peak Performance Plan.
  • Manage all aspects of the Peak Performance Pan including budgeting and contracting guest speakers for the coaching staff and student-athletes on various wellness, leadership and inclusion topics.
  • Identify and assist in the leadership development of the Rising Stars, a group of high potential first year and sophomore leaders and Core20, a group of proven veteran leaders.
  • Teach and mentor student-athletes on critical skills and strategies to become effective, responsible and respected leaders.
  • Coordinate the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) in departmental, HWS, Geneva community and NCAA civic engagement and governance.
  • Develop and implement support programming for student-athletes of color, LGBT student-athletes, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other appropriate groupings through collaboration with the Office of Intercultural Affairs, PRIDE Alliance Club, Religious Life Office and other on and off campus resources.
  • Serve on department and campus committees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Rowing and/or coaching experience at the college-level highly preferred. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential to teach, lead and counsel college student-athletes and have the skills to coordinate a comprehensive leadership and lifeskills curriculum. A valid driver’s license is required.

This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible, administrative position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
