Assistant Hobart Rowing Coach/HWS Rigger
Department of William Smith Athletics

SUMMARY:

Assist the head coach in all facets of the Hobart rowing program, including practice planning, recruiting, conditioning, race management, administrative tasks, leading the novice crew program and other duties as assigned. Duties as the Hobart (men) and William Smith (women) Colleges rowing teams’ rigger will include general boathouse maintenance; inventory, maintenance and repair of rowing related equipment; home race event management; transporting rowing equipment to away races; and other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coaching:

  • Assist in the planning, teaching and supervising of practices and conditioning sessions.
  • Assist in planning team travel.
  • Demonstrate competency in sport skill instruction, motivation, and the ability to conduct practice sessions under the direction of the head coach as well as independently with the Hobart novice team.
  • Effectively recruit prospective student-athletes under the direction of the head coach.
  • Adhere to all sport governing, departmental, and institutional rules and policies.
  • Assist the head coach in planning and implementing fund raising programs.
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in the personal, academic and athletic progress of student-athletes.
  • Exhibit supportive and cooperative behavior pursuing sport progr am goals set by the head coach.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability and professional behavior when dealing with student-athletes.
  • Efficiently and effectively complete tasks assigned by the head coach.
  • Accept constructive criticism and work toward consistent professional improvement.
  • Assist with Hobart Department of Athletics special events.

Rigger:

  • Maintain, repair and inventory all rowing related equipment.
  • Maintain coaches’ launches and daily gas supply.
  • Rig rowing shells to fit athletes and conditions.
  • Assist with home race events including course setup and cleanup.
  • Assist with transporting rowing equipment to away races.
  • Maintain boathouse relative to cleanliness and organization of boat bays and storage areas.
  • Communicate with Buildings and Grounds Department regarding boathouse and dock maintenance.
  • Oversight on maintenance of tow vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Rowing and/or coaching experience at the college-level highly preferred. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential to teach, lead and counsel college student-athletes and have the skills to assist in the management of a boathouse. A valid driver’s license is required.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible, administrative position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
