POSITION DESCRIPTION

Assistant Athletic Trainer
Department of Hobart Athletics

SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting in all areas of sports-related injuries to include preventative care, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation. Will share in the supervision and development of student aides; the coverage of team practices and contests; the communication between physicians, coaches and parents; and the computerized record keeping on injuries and treatment. Primary, although not exclusive, responsibility for Hobart soccer and ice hockey, pre-season, non-traditional practice sessions for both Hobart and William Smith teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Care, Prevention and Rehabilitation of Injuries –

  • A working knowledge of nutrition and its importance with athletic training
  • A working knowledge of warm-up and warm-down procedures
  • Evaluation of injuries
  • Taping of injuries
  • Administer proper first aid procedures where needed
  • Working knowledge of CPR/AED
  • Working knowledge of rehabilitation procedures and equipment: Hydro therapy (whirlpool), Cybex, Electro muscle stimulator/ultrasound, and Weight training techniques

Supervision of Practice and Contests –

  • Attend and supervise those practices as directed by head trainer
  • Attend and supervise those contests (home and away) as directed by head trainer
  • Maintain communication during practice and contests with appropriate personnel (head trainer, security, emergency vehicle group)

Management and Development of Student Trainers –

  • Work with head trainer in the recruitment of student aides.
  • Assist in the training of the students to bring them to satisfactory levels of proficiency in first aid and basic athletic training skills.
  • Assist in the effective coordination of schedules for student trainers in the coverage of practices and contests.

Injury/Treatment Recording –

  • By computer, record day-to-day injury and treatments.
  • By computer, maintain individual student-athlete sports medicine record.
  • Record medical ex amination status of student-athletes and clear student-athletes with athletic department equipment personnel for participation.

Communication –

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with all staff members in the Hobart and Willi am Smith departments.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with Colleges’ student health services staff.
  • Follow-up communication on injured athletes with coaches and parents, if necessary.
  • Follow the instructions and orders of Health Center Physician and Dr. James Mark.
  • Establish and maintain effective and professional communication with student-athletes under care.

Professional Development –

  • Maintain certified athletic trainer classification with NATA.
  • Obtain and maintain certified athletic trainer certification classification through New York State.
  • Work to stay current with ever changing techniques in the field of athletic training.
  • Through increased knowledge, strive to continually improve the care of student-athletes.
  • Attend and participate in regional and national conferences as directed and approved by the head trainer.

Miscellaneous –

  • Participate and assist in directing the drug and alcohol education progr am for the student-athletes.
  • Assist in the maintenance and inventory of athletic training supplies.
  • Participate in the planning of athletic training needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Present NATA certification or eligibility for certification. A degree in Sports Medicine or related fields. Ability to work effectively with college students. A desire to work within the framework of all College departmental policies and requirements.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible, administrative position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
