For individuals looking for a great summer job or career as a safety team professional, the best place to start is with comprehensive training and certification provided by Hobart and William Smith Aquatics Camp in conjunction with the American Red Cross.
The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Finger Lakes Aquatics Camp is an intense, residential training experience that is perfect for individuals who plan to work at swimming pools, town recreation programs or summer camps and prefer the necessary training in a concentrated three-day format. The camp will be held on the HWS campus, located on the beautiful shore of Seneca Lake.
The camp will offer a range of courses to teach the skills and knowledge you will need to join or lead a lifeguard team. In addition, instructor training programs give you the opportunity for additional leadership and responsibility. Both new participants and those who need to renew are welcome and can be accommodated by this camp training experience.
Cost includes training, books and materials, 3 nights lodging on campus and 3 days of meals.* Red Cross requirements for each course selected must be read and Agreement indicated before registration can be completed.
Lifeguarding (LG), Cost $530
Provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.
Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Cost $480
Provides participants with skills and knowledge to teach people to swim and how to be safe in, on and around the water.
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), Cost $680 (includes DVDs)
Provides skills and knowledge needed to train Lifeguards and provides instructor status in all areas required for American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
Lifeguarding with Waterfront, Cost $580
Provides the information for lifeguarding with the added knowledge to prevent and respond to emergencies in non-surf, open water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds.
Responding to Emergencies (RTE), Cost $330
Provides knowledge to recognize breathing, cardiac and other health emergencies, when to call emergency medicate services (EMS), and how to sustain the victim using First Aid and CPR skills available to lay responders.
Cost includes training, books, materials and lunch. Additional food and lodging options are available for those traveling distances. Red Cross requirements for each course selected must be read and Agreement indicated before registration can be completed.

Waterfront Lifeguarding Skills (must have Lifeguarding certification)
*The Finger Lakes Aquatic Camp is a concentrated, intense training experience and a dedicated space on campus will provide a place to study and rest and eat without additional travel time and past experience has shown will contribute to the success of the training.
The Finger Lakes Aquatics Camp is a residential experience and due to the rigorous nature of the program, all prices include room and meals. The only exception is one-day courses which include meals. One-day lodging is available if requested at time of registration.
