What is eduroam?

Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.

Why use eduroam?

It is convenient and secure. With hundreds of thousands of wireless access-points sharing a common SSID, eduroam acts as one large, world-wide, wireless hotspot. By joining eduroam you extend the network to visitors at your institution without adding any additional maintenance responsibilities to your IT staff. Moreover, by extending the network, you help guarantee access to your own students and faculty while they are abroad.

When would I use eduroam?

Eduroam is to be used to obtain secure Internet access while visiting a participating institution.

Where is eduroam available?

Check the eduroam Web site for participating institution in the US and abroad.

Will I still need to use VPN (access.hws.edu) to access my network drives?

Yes, if you need to access your HWS network drives you will still need to utilize the VPN service. Eduroam is for Internet access, not network access.

Is this available to all students, faculty, and staff?

Yes. Everyone with an HWS network account is automatically allowed to use this service.

Will I use my HWS network credentials?

Yes, but, to sign in to eduroam you must use your full HWS ID including @hws.edu. For example, a student's full HWS ID would be AB1234@hws.edu, and a faculty/staff member's full HWS ID would be lastname@hws.edu.

I’m planning a visit to a participating campus. How do I connect when I am there?

We strongly recommend that you configure your device for eduroam while on the HWS campus before you leave. Once you are at a participating campus, all you have to do is turn on your device and it will connect automatically!
