Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff –
As we begin the 2010 – 11 Academic Year, we wanted to take this opportunity to share an update with the community on options for upgrading all existing computers to the latest versions of the Snow Leopard and Windows 7 operating systems for Mac and Windows computers.
The upgrade, to the new operating systems, is available as part of our existing campus license and did not entail any additional cost to the Institution. This work allows us to get the campus upgraded to a common operating system for each platform. These upgrades will proactively alleviate compatibility issues as much as possible. In some cases, the new operating systems are required to run some software programs. IT Services has been supporting the new operating systems on new computers and student computers, and we are now able to provide them to all faculty, staff or students wishing to upgrade.
IT Services has worked with a number of pilot user groups comprised of faculty and staff across campus to test both operating systems with a variety of hardware configurations. This has also included testing the broad set of over one hundred administrative and academic software programs in use across campus.
There are several approaches being taken to facilitate the transition to the new operating systems.
The objective is to have all HWS computers upgraded to either Snow Leopard or Windows 7 by March 30, 2011. This will allow the upgrade to be completed well before the end of the Spring semester and academic year. HWS computers in the following spaces have already been upgraded:
