Announcement: Operating System Upgrade

September 15, 2010

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff –

As we begin the 2010 – 11 Academic Year, we wanted to take this opportunity to share an update with the community on options for upgrading all existing computers to the latest versions of the Snow Leopard and Windows 7 operating systems for Mac and Windows computers.

The upgrade, to the new operating systems, is available as part of our existing campus license and did not entail any additional cost to the Institution. This work allows us to get the campus upgraded to a common operating system for each platform. These upgrades will proactively alleviate compatibility issues as much as possible. In some cases, the new operating systems are required to run some software programs. IT Services has been supporting the new operating systems on new computers and student computers, and we are now able to provide them to all faculty, staff or students wishing to upgrade.

IT Services has worked with a number of pilot user groups comprised of faculty and staff across campus to test both operating systems with a variety of hardware configurations. This has also included testing the broad set of over one hundred administrative and academic software programs in use across campus.

There are several approaches being taken to facilitate the transition to the new operating systems.

  1. As new HWS computers are procured, they will be imaged and deployed with the Snow Leopard or Windows 7 operating system.
  2. As individual computers are sent in for repairs or require support from IT Services, we will work with individual users on upgrading to the new operating systems for their computer.
  3. Any student, faculty, or staff member can request and schedule their computer to be upgraded by sending a request to helpdesk@hws.edu.

The objective is to have all HWS computers upgraded to either Snow Leopard or Windows 7 by March 30, 2011. This will allow the upgrade to be completed well before the end of the Spring semester and academic year. HWS computers in the following spaces have already been upgraded:

  • Rosenberg Mac Lab
  • Library, including the MM Lab and Rosensweig Learning Commons
  • Gulick 208
  • Digital Imaging Lab at the Carriage House
  • All Smart Classrooms

A set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) is available and should answer most of the questions you may have. For any additional questions, please contact the Help Desk at 315-781-4357, by phone or helpdesk@hws.edu by e-mail.
