Volunteers collect waste during Honeoye Lake Roadside Cleanup.
Greening for the Greater Good
The FLI coordinates public service to increase community engagement, raise awareness of local environmental issues, and to encourage a sense of place and accountability to our natural surroundings. By working with our regional partners, the FLI solicits and recruits volunteers for regional projects, such as invasive species hand-pulls, tree plantings, bird banding, beach cleanups, and trail restoration. The Institute also dedicates staff to participate in partner events and programs by presenting on topics relating to the Finger Lakes environment and the FLI. Example Greening for the Greater Good public service events include:
- Honeoye Lake Roadside Cleanup
- Montezuma MARSH Frogbit and Stiltgrass pulls, tree planting and bird banding
- Seneca Lake Beach and Castle Creek Cleanups
- Keuka Marsh Water Chestnut Pull
- Rain Barrel Workshops
