Join this year's third Day of Service, which will be held on Saturday, April 12. Volunteers are asked to meet on the Quad at 12 p.m. before heading to 18 different sites across the greater Geneva area.
A Geneva tradition for 20 years, Day of Service became Days of Service in 2008, when students and the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning added additional Days of Service throughout the year so more HWS and Geneva community members could get involved and to create sustained relationships between community members.
The Colleges host four Days of Service each year, the first of which is at Orientation and introduces incoming students to many local organizations and service opportunities, and the others take place throughout the year.
Opportunities on April 12 will include cleaning and maintenance for such sites as St. Peter's Church, Beverly's Animal Shelter, Geneva Women's Club and Harmony Food Pantry. Volunteers may also be assigned to help plant a premature garden on campus and attaching labels to storm drains on the Seneca Lake Watershed markers.
Jeremy Wattles, assistant director for the Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning, says the day is about friendship and service.
"Each Day of Service brings students and staff together to make friends while serving the community. We aspire to address demonstrated needs that community partners have identified for us. In the best of situations, we are able to partner with Geneva residents and citizens to accomplish something meaningful, such as a city infrastructure project, or a park cleanup."
Wattles continues, "We are very proud to celebrate this 20-year tradition, this time with students, staff, alums, and prospective students. We hope this will be an opportunity to work with the Geneva community as well as reflect on the importance of a generation-long culture of engagement. We are hoping for between 250 - 300 volunteers!"
