HWS Chorale Launches 2014 Tour

Posted on Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Under the direction of Professor of Music Bob Cowles, HWS Chorale will present its annual concert tour this year at several venues between Geneva and Boston.

A mixed ensemble, Chorale is comprised of the finest student vocal talent on the campus. With 35 members, the group performs a wide range of a cappella choral literature - a selection of pieces from the Middle Ages to the present day.

This year, Chorale will perform various secular Renaissance works, including several by Claudio Monteverdi, as well as sacred works by Hans Leo Hassler, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Jan Pieterszoon Sweeklinck. There will be several recent American works as well. In addition, the chamber ensemble, Cantori, will perform a newly commissioned work by Kansas City-based composer Nicholas Omiccioli.

Cowles chairs the HWS Music Department and has been a member of the faculty since 1992, directing choral ensembles and teaching music theory and conducting. He also is artistic director of the Syracuse Vocal Ensemble, a semi-professional chamber choir. Cowles is known as a champion of new music, having conducted numerous world-premiere performances during his tenure at HWS.

He received his B.A. from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., his M.M. from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass., and his D.Mus. from Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Ind.
