2014 Orientation Coordinators Named

Posted on Friday, February 21, 2014

As the excitement of welcoming the Classes of 2018 continues to build, HWS is adding to that enthusiasm with the announcement of the 2014 Orientation Coordinators: Paul Ciaccia '15 and Dana Williams '16.

In their roles, Ciaccia and Williams will coordinate a fun-filled weekend of events that unifies the Classes, builds community, promotes civic engagement and introduces the incoming first-year students to life at HWS. Together, Ciaccia and Williams will coordinate a team of more than 100 orientation leaders and mentors.

"I couldn't be more excited and grateful for this opportunity," Williams says. "HWS has given so much to me and I can't wait to help welcome the Classes of 2018 to such a wonderful and encouraging place."

Both Ciaccia and Williams bring a wealth of leadership experience and passion to the position. Each has been thoroughly involved with previous HWS Orientations, with Ciaccia serving as an Orientation Mentor in 2012, and each serving as 2013 Orientation Leaders.

In preparing for Orientation, both students already are eagerly beginning the planning phase of their work. The weekend of events typically contains a range of offerings, with past events including, a buffet-style culinary sampling of Geneva's finest food-spots, which also allows incoming first-years to choose their favorite grub and the annual Day of Service. For the service activities, students head off campus, volunteering at local non-profits, schools and community groups.

As part of Orientation, Ciaccia says he's looking forward to creating a positive and comfortable transition for the incoming students with activities that will help them settle in during their first few days on campus. Based on his previous involvement, Ciaccia says he's excited at the prospect of being able to plan and carry out such an important event.

"We're looking forward to fulfilling all of the goals that Orientation traditionally has," Ciaccia says. "I also want to provide unique and interesting opportunities for students as well."

As the newly named Orientation Coordinators immerse themselves in plans for the event, Williams says she's excited to work with Ciaccia and build a dynamic team of support. "I'm looking forward to working with all of the different offices on campus and generating new ideas to make this Orientation the most exciting and welcoming event we can," she says.

Williams says one of her main goals for that weekend is "to harness the love and excitement we all have for the Colleges and find new and exciting ways to convey that to the Classes of 2018."

Ciaccia is double majoring in media and society, and English. He is a Presidential Service Scholar and serves as the president of the Chi Phi Fraternity. Ciaccia also is an Admissions Tour Guide, in which he regularly introduces prospective students and their families to the HWS community. He has served as an HWS Connect Student Ambassador and has assisted with HWS Reunion. Ciaccia has been involved in a number of service activities as well, including Relay for Life and HWS Day of Service. He also is a skilled pastry chef and has promised to prepare his specialty, cannoli, for students and staff this summer.

Williams is a dual major in sociology and public policy. She has served as vice president of William Smith Congress and has been an active participant at the Centennial Center for Leadership, where she completed the HWS Leads Certificate Program and served as co-leader of the Youth Leadership College for young children of Geneva, N.Y. She also serves as an Admissions Tour Guide, works at the William Smith Dean's office, and serves as an HWS student ambassador for Public Leadership Education Network.

Members of the Classes of 2018 are invited to join the Classes of 2018 Facebook Page where information and updates about the incoming Classes and HWS can be found.
