Hydration Station Kicks Off Club’s Plan

Posted on Monday, March 10, 2014

Through a collaboration with the northeast-based environmental organization, BeCause Water, the Campus Greens Club received a grant to install a hydration station at the Scandling Campus Center this semester. The opening of the hydration station reinforces the theme of sustainable water use the club has adopted for the semester. They hope students will use the station to refill reusable water bottles rather than buy single-use, plastic water bottles.

"The club is taking a new direction this semester, and we're working to increase the club's outreach to engage and motivate more students towards making a more sustainable HWS," says Virginia Dewees '16, co-chair of Campus Greens. "We intend to achieve this through planning weekly meetings with a focus on preparations for Earth Week, the series of events in April."

Many of the Earth Week events will address the issue of sustainable water use on campus as well as internationally. To address the issue on a global scale, the Greens are organizing a "Clean Water 6K" race during Earth Week. Students and faculty will be able to sign up for the Clean Water 6K prior to Earth Week this year, with the entry fee going toward installation of another hydration station on campus. At the finish line, members of the Greens Club will be distributing reusable water bottles to the top finishers.

"The 6K is an intentional distance because it's the average distance people in developing nations have to walk to a water source," explains Jeff Rizza '16, Greens co-chair. "This race will hopefully promote awareness in students and faculty on the issues of sustainable water use globally."

Campus Greens meetings are held every Monday at 8 p.m. at the Intercultural Affairs House, located at 288 Pulteney St. New members are welcome.
