In anticipation of finals, Resident Assistants and Teaching Fellows/Study Mentors will provide academic assistance and a variety of de-stressing services to students, in the lounge on the first floor of Rees Hall on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 12 to 3 p.m.
From tutoring to time-management and study tips to study supplies and snacks, these services are designed to help first-years navigate the first final exams, essays and projects of their undergraduate careers, says Peter Budmen '14, who spearheaded this event.
"Finals week can be daunting, especially for first-years. I wanted to make things easier and lessen the stress," says Budmen, who is also Senior Resident Assistant for the students in Jackson-Potter-Rees-Sherrill.
Budmen, along with the other RAs in these predominately first-year residence halls, teamed up with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to enlist Writing, Teaching and Q Fellows, who, along with study mentors, will provide academic assistance in philosophy, economics, English, writing and rhetoric, psychology, international relations, biology and physics.
"We're hoping first-year students who haven't made use of CTL gain awareness of the services for when they come back to campus in the spring," says Ingrid Keenan, program coordinator at CTL.
"Ingrid and Ruth Shields both solidified and narrowed down our idea," Budmen says. "They helped to focus program and get the program running. We couldn't have done it without them."
RAs with a variety of academic backgrounds and majors will also be available to assist students.
In addition to the academic assistance, de-stressing activities and services will be provided, including yoga and deep breathing exercises, emotional and physical release techniques, cookie decorating, snowflake making and stress ball creation (and use).
Supplying study materials (colored pens, index cards, pencils, pens, erasers, sticky notes) and snacks (pretzels, hot chocolate, granola bars, apples, raisins, coffee, tea and water) will be provided with support from CTL and the Office of Residential Education.
