Hanukkah Celebrations Planned
Posted on Tuesday, November 26, 2013
This year, Hanukkah begins on Thanksgiving, giving members of the HWS community an opportunity to celebrate the start of the holiday at home with family and friends. HWS Hillel and the Abbe Center for Jewish Life have scheduled activities following Thanksgiving weekend, so the campus community can celebrate the remainder of Hanukkah together. Lighting of the menorah and special activities are scheduled for each night of the holiday at the Abbe Center.
Sunday, Dec. 1: Hanukkah celebration and candle lighting begin at 6 p.m. Soofganiyot (jelly doughnuts) will be served.
Monday, Dec. 2: Hanukkah menorah lighting and latkes at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 3: Candle lighting will take place at 6 p.m, with Hanukkah cookies to decorate - for eating and sharing!
Wednesday, Dec. 4: The Third Annual Fried Food Fest to celebrate the last night of Hanukkah will be held at 6 p.m. Join members of the Colleges' community to light the menorah and enjoy latkes and more!
The Abbe Center for Jewish Life, home of HWS Hillel and The Jewish Culture Theme House, is the center of Jewish life on campus. Since its renovation in 2007 through a gift from former HWS Trustee Richard Abbe '92 and his wife, Merav, Jewish life on campus has witnessed an undeniable growth in participation in all of its programming.
The Center holds many events for the Jewish community throughout the year such as the Rosh Hashanah Eve dinner, the pre-fast dinner before Yom Kippur, meals in the Sukkah during the Sukkoth holiday, a Passover Seder, and Holocaust Awareness Week programs. The events are open to all, regardless of religious affiliation.
