Get Ready for Penguin Plunge

Posted on Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Members of the HWS community will soon plunge into the chilly waters of Seneca Lake on a mission of adventure and philanthropy as part of the Fifth Annual Penguin Plunge. Sponsored by Hope House, the event benefits Embrace Your Sisters, a breast cancer organization located in Ontario County that gives emergency funding to families affected by breast cancer. This year's Penguin Plunge takes place at Seneca Lake State Park at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.

Five celebrity jumpers will take part in the event: Cadence Whittier, associate professor of dance; Adam Maurer, sustainability manager; Lisa Gibson, Saga; Russ Hess, director of sports and recreation; and Sarah Meyer, community outreach coordinator for the Finger Lakes Institute at HWS.

"The Hope House is working diligently to make this the best plunge yet," says junior Brenna Kincaid, an organizer of the event. "We hope that everyone is as excited about the event as we are!"

The Penguin Plunge was created three years ago by the members of the Cancer Awareness Theme House with an aspiration to get people involved for a cause while having fun. The annual event has been a huge success with up to 150 people participating each year.

Each participant donates $5 to Embrace Your Sisters to take a quick plunge in the lake, or others may donate $5 on behalf of someone who wishes to jump. Van transportation shuttle is available from the Medbery parking Lot beginning at 3:30 p.m. On-site registration is available.
