Global and Community Leadership Fellow Solomé Rose recently served as a panelist for the Ontario Yates Fund for Women (ONYA) Voices of Experience event, which took place at the Ramada Inn Geneva Lakefront this fall.
The annual event sponsored by ONYA is centered on life education skills for girls in elementary and middle schools. The organization's mission is "to inspire and advance philanthropy that funds nonprofit programs to foster personal and economic growth among women and girls throughout Ontario and Yates counties," says ONYA President Maggie Meyers.
Panelists at the ONYA event represented a diverse group of women, including local business owners and community leaders from both counties.
"We represented different age groups, races, and professions, but what united us was our commitment to connect with these girls by sharing our stories," says Rose. The presentations were followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
As one of the event's six panelists, Rose spoke with the audience about her untraditional upbringing, which involved living in several different parts of the world.
"I shared my personal story," she says. "I shared my successes and failures. What I tried to convey to the girls was that the obstacles we endure and overcome as women help to strengthen us. Only through hardship can we build character and perseverance."
Rose joined the HWS community this year as the Global and Community Leadership Fellow at the Centennial Center for Leadership. She completed her undergraduate studies in foreign affairs and African American studies at the University of Virginia in 2008 and holds a master's degree in public policy from George Mason University. Rose has also worked with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Africa Action in Washington, D.C., and the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American Studies in Virginia.
"Having lived and worked in different parts of the world, I have used those experiences and knowledge base to inform the work I currently do for the CCL around global leadership," Rose says. Her work at HWS focuses on developing new global and community leadership programs for CCL.
