Koshare Moves to the Smith
Posted on Thursday, November 14, 2013
Every November, hundreds of campus and community members line-up along the winding path to Winn-Seely Gymnasium, waiting upwards of an hour in hopes of getting a seat to one of the biggest performances of the year - the Annual Koshare Dance Collective show. This year, however, avid fans won't have to worry about not finding a seat: for the first time, the event will be held at the Smith Opera House.
With sold out shows being attended by upwards of 1,000 people each year, Koshare's popularity has expanded beyond the 380-person-seating capacity of the Winn-Seeley Gym-Theatre; a shift to the Smith's 1,300-plus capacity will ensure that no one will be turned away from seeing the collective's vibrant student-run show, which will run on Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
"Koshare successfully exposes the HWS and Geneva community to the arts every year, and we are very excited to be able to reach a higher number of people and perform on the Smith Opera House stage," says Jenna Davidson-Catalano '14, co-president of Koshare.
Not only are all dancers and choreographers students, anyone can join the student-run organization - no matter his or her experience level. Some students involved in Koshare are dance majors and minors, but others are performing or choreographing for the first time. This year, more than 100 dancers will perform in 26 different dances, choreographed or co-choreographed by 31 students.
The styles of dance on this year's program include African, Step, Modern, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Tango, Bollywood, Belly Dance, Ballet and Jazz.
Tickets are free for HWS students and students K-12. General admission is $5. Tickets can be ordered online at the Smith Opera House website or purchased at the door. Members of Koshare will table in Scandling throughout the week before the performances so that students may pick up their tickets ahead of time.
