Green Room Certification Underway
Posted on Monday, November 11, 2013
As the temperature drops and energy use for heat cranks up in residence halls, senior EcoReps are championing sustainability efforts for student housing. They are again offering Green Room Certification (GRC), a movement that emphasizes ownership and awareness of sustainable practices among students.
EcoRep Stacey Davis '15 enjoys "giving students on campus a sense of direction toward living more sustainable and eco-conscious lives."
"We hope that students become more aware of the simple changes that they can make in their everyday lives to have less of an impact on the environment as a whole, especially when it comes to energy, water usage, waste management and consumption," she says.
To take part in the Green Room Certification process, students can register their dorm rooms through a link on the Environmental Sustainability portion of the HWS website. After completing the form, students will be visited by EcoReps who can verify information and answer any questions about the form or sustainability in general.
Senior EcoRep Mekala Bertocci '14 believes colleges such as HWS "serve as microcosms for the rest of society, and are a great place to make strides in encouraging sustainable practices."
Many of Bertocci's fellow EcoReps, like Mary McLoughlin '15, share a strong interest in sustainable architecture, and as McLoughlin puts it, "how people interact with the space around them in a sustainable manner."
The Eco Reps will be tabling in the Scandling Campus Center from Wednesday, Nov. 13 through Friday, Nov. 15, as well as in the Library Atrium on Sunday, Nov. 17. All students who fill out the form between Monday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 24 will be entered in a drawing. The winners will receive Sodexo snack money.
