The HWS Newman Club is getting into the Thanksgiving spirit by asking students to express what they're thankful for this holiday season. The club plans to create a YouTube video called "HWS Gives Thanks," a collaborative effort that will include images of HWS students holding signs of what they are thankful for.
"The ultimate goal of this production is to encourage community members to start thinking about what they are thankful for," says Melissa Hosek '14, co-president of the Newman Club. "So often the semester becomes hectic around Thanksgiving break. This project will hopefully remind us to take a moment out of these busy weeks to pause, reflect and give thanks for the blessings in our lives."
Members of the Newman Club will be in the Scandling Campus Center during lunch hours from Monday, Nov. 11 through Friday, Nov. 15 to photograph students for the project. The finished product will be shown at the Newman Club meeting on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in Demarest 014. Following the video there will also be a discussion regarding Thanksgiving and the community.
Hosek and co-president Kirstie Meltzer '15 came up with the idea after attending the Intercultural Affairs Student Leader Summit in September. The event allowed club leaders to think about creative events and meeting themes to have throughout the fall semester, Hosek says.
The Newman Club works to create a community among Catholics on campus. Its goal is to provide spiritual education and fellowship, in accordance with the morals of the Catholic Church. Club members participate in mass, organize community service and work to strengthen faith through prayers and retreat.
In addition to the "HWS Gives Thanks" project, the Newman Club is hosting an array of other events throughout the fall semester. The club will sponsor their annual "A Card for Every Senior" project, a holiday card writing campaign for local senior citizens, between Wednesday, Nov. 13, and Friday Nov. 15.
Other events include: Christmas caroling sponsored by Religious Life at date in December to be announced; and an advent Party hosted by the club on Sunday, Dec. 1.
The Newman Club meets on Sundays from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Students interested in joining Newman Club can contact Hosek at Melissa.email@example.com.
