HWS Making Waves at America’s Cup

Posted on Thursday, September 26, 2013

When Oracle Team USA won the 34th America's Cup on Sept. 25, three alums who competed on Hobart and William Smith Colleges' sailing team were an integral part of the action. Sarah Hawkins '03 is digital media manager for America's Cup, while Amory Ross '06, videographer, and Kate Wilson '08, brand manager, work for Oracle Team USA. The role each plays is featured in the summer issue of the Pulteney St. Survey.

An article in the Providence Journal following the win (September 26, 2013) notes:

"Video aboard the boat, managed by the team's videographer, Amory Ross, of Newport, helped the team improve its technique."

Ross is a specialist in nautical photography, video and multi-media. He has been a member of many racing crews including Oracle Team USA. A four-year member of the HWS sailing team, Ross helped the Colleges earn 14 ICSA Championship berths, including the 2005 Team Race and Coed Dinghy National Championships. A double major in economics and public policy, he spent a semester studying off campus in Washington, D.C. Ross turned his love of sailing and photography into a business, Amory Ross Images. His work also has been featured on the cover of Sail, Sailing World, Seahorse International Sailing, and Yachting World.

Hawkins earned her B.A. in art history from William Smith. She oversees America's Cup's digital communication strategies and works with each team to effectively use social media, also manages the live stream on YouTube.com during races, serves as an online commentator and works closely with NBC Sports to televise the competition-coverage that is new for this America's Cup. Constantly adjustable courses keep the races within broadcast-friendly times.

Wilson earned her B.A. in architectural studies from William Smith and minored in mathematics. As a student she studied abroad in Copenhagen and was named to the dean's list. She serves as the team's brand manager.
