The Hobart College soccer team scored two goals off corner kicks in the first half to secure a 2-0 victory over visiting Geneseo today in the non-league match played on a rainy Cozzens Field. The Statesmen improve to 4-3-0, while the Knights fall to 2-4-1 overall.
First-year Charlie Kelly gave Hobart a 1-0 lead just 11:16 into the match. The Statesmen earned the first corner kick of the game, and sophomore Marco Ronning fired it into the box. Kelly was there to send a header into the back of the net. Kelly leads Hobart with four goals and nine points.
With 3:30 left in the first half, junior Oddmund Nesbakk made it 2-0 with his first goal this season. Hobart earned another corner, which was sent into the box by senior Kaeghan Kelly. The ball bounced around in the box and deflected off a Geneseo defender before it came to Nesbakk who fired in a low shot from right out in front. The Statesmen enjoyed an 8-0 advantage in corners in the match.
One of Geneseo's best scoring chances came in the 58th minute. Craig Schacker sent a hard header on goal but Hobart's goalie sophomore Tyler Serafine was positioned perfectly to make the save. The Statesmen almost made it 3-0 in the 71st minute. Sophomore Ryan Farrell fired a shot on goal with the keeper out of place, but it was saved by Geneseo defender Terence McGovern. With 17 minutes remaining, Neil Allen blasted a shot for Geneseo that bounced off a Hobart defender but was grabbed by Serafine before crossing the goal line. Serafine finished with three stops to clinch his second shutout this season.
Total shots for the match were even at 14 apiece, however, Hobart held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Dan Maddock played the opening 23:42 in goal for Geneseo and made one save before having to leave the match due to an injury. Logan Calvey came in for the final 66:18 and made three saves.
