HWS Sailing Wins New York Maritime Open

The HWS sailing team captured first place at the New York Maritime Open this weekend in Throggs Neck, N.Y. HWS sailors also competed in the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y., over the weekend.
At the New York Maritime Open, sophomore Brendan O'Leary and junior Marnie Merrill won the B Division. The pair placed in the top five in 11 out of their 12 races, earning two wins. In the A Division, junior Elliott Morrill and senior Adele Huffine finished second, just three points shy of first place. The duo finished in the top five in races 3-12, registering three wins.
HWS finished 16th in the Nevins Trophy. Sophomore Eddie Cox and seniors Jane Rew and Julia Oak placed 14th in the A Division, after being edged by Fordham by a tie breaker determined by the number of high place finishes. In the B Division, sophomore Stewart Draheim teamed with Oak, Rew and senior Mike Deady to finish in 13th place. First-year Sean Burke recorded a 16th place finish in the C Division.
HWS sailors will be back on the water Sept. 28-29, when they compete in three regattas. Seniors Arielle deLisser and Brooke Lyon will be competing in the Faye Bennet Trophy, a MAISA Conference Championship event, in Annapolis, Md. HWS will host the North Fall No. 1, and HWS sailors will also be competing in the MAISA Laser Qualifier in Kings Point, N.Y.
