Junior Madeline Buckley had a hand in all three goals as the No. 9 William Smith soccer team downed No. 25 Rochester 3-0 in a first round match of the 2013 Upstate Collegiate Cup played on Cozzens Field today. The Herons improve to 3-1-0 overall, while the Yellowjackets fall to 3-2-0.
William Smith advances to the Upstate Collegiate Cup championship match, which will be played tomorrow on Cozzens Field at 4 p.m. The Herons will take on No. 5 Ithaca, who defeated Cortland 3-0 in their first round match this afternoon, in Cortland, N.Y. The Yellowjackets will play the Red Dragons in the consolation match which is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. also on Cozzens Field.
Buckley led William Smith with a goal and two assists. First-years Kara Shue and Evie Manning each chipped in a goal. Senior Chelsea Dunay played the opening 83:30 in goal and stopped the one shot she faced. First-year Olivia Biles came in for the final 6:30.
The Herons broke through to take a 1-0 lead 9:40 in. Buckley sent a crossing pass from the right corner of the field. She found Shue who fired a shot into the right corner of the goal. Shue leads William Smith with three goals this season. Shue came inches away from scoring again with 14:09 left in the opening half. She left-footed a shot that the Rochester goalie punched just over the crossbar.
The Yellowjackets had their best scoring opportunity of the match with 4:51 left in the first. Kim Stagg blasted a shot from 20 yards out that went just inches over the crossbar.
Buckley scored her first goal of the season in the 56th minute. First-year Emma Diehl lofted the ball into the box, and Buckley placed a shot into the top left corner of the goal. In the 62nd minute, Buckley pushed a pass ahead to Manning, who was streaking into the box. Manning blasted a sliding shot into the upper left corner of the goal. It was her first collegiate tally.
The Yellowjackets had their best scoring chance of the second half with 11:58 remaining in the match. Hannah Geitner fired a shot from just inside the box, but it sailed wide left. Rochester also earned a corner with 4:07 left in regulation, but the ball was quickly cleared out of the zone by the Heron defense.
Allison Bernstein played all 90 minutes in goal for the Yellowjackets and finished with nine saves. William Smith enjoyed a 22-7 advantage in shots, including a 15-3 lead in the second half. The Herons also held a 6-1 edge in corners.
