William Smith College first-year defender Bridget Westerman was named the Liberty League Women's Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week and sophomore midfielder Zoe Eth earned a spot on the league's honor roll.
Westerman played all 90 minutes in the Herons' 1-0 victory over top-ranked Messiah on Saturday. She played a key role in the William Smith defensive unit that limited the Falcons to just five shots on goal. In Messiah's last 122 matches, the Falcons have only been shut out twice, both times by William Smith.
Eth scored the game-winning goal against Messiah. Her header off a corner in the 31st minute was her first goal this season. The victory marked the first time in program history that the Herons have defeated the Falcons.
William Smith (2-1) will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they host No. 24 Rochester at 11 a.m. for the first match of the 2013 Upstate Collegiate Cup. The second match-up between No. 9 Ithaca and Cortland will be played in Cortland at 11 a.m. The consolation and championship matches will take place in Geneva on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 and 4 p.m., respectively.
