William Smith College senior Margaret McConnell was named the Liberty League Field Hockey Defensive Performer of the Week by the conference office today. She made the single biggest play of the match in 10th-ranked Herons' 2-1 win over Ursinus College on Saturday.
In a tied match, the Bears, who were receiving votes in the NFHCA preseason poll, brought intense pressure in the second half, outshooting William Smith 8-2. Ursinus nearly broke the tie in the 54th minute, blasting a shot from the top of the arc that beat the Heron keeper. However, McConnell, with her heels on the goal line, was there to earn the defensive save, to set the stage for the game-winning goal nine minutes later.
McConnell's first career defensive save earned her her first weekly award from the conference.
William Smith (2-0) is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when the Herons host SUNY Geneseo (2-1). Since 1998, the two teams have squared off 15 times, with the Herons owning a 14-1 series lead. The Blue Knights lone victory was a 2-1 decision during the 2010 season. William Smith won last year's showdown 4-0.
The match will be broadcast live by WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva). Online, fans can follow the action with All-Access Video and Live Stats. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on McCooey Field.
