Hobart Presented Sportsmanship Award

Posted on Wednesday, August 28, 2013

The Hobart College basketball team was presented with the Eastern Upstate New York Collegiate Basketball Officials Association's Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award for the third year in a row.

"The Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award is a prestigious award that our basketball program is very honored to receive," said Hobart College Athletic Director Mike Hanna. "Having earned this recognition three years running is certainly a fitting tribute to the respect Coach Neer, the student-athletes and the assistant coaches give to their opponents."

In 2012-13, the Statesmen logged a 21-7 overall record.  Hobart captured the Liberty League regular season title with a 15-1 mark in conference play. With a 72-63 victory over Rensselaer, the Statesmen earned their first conference tournament title since 2001. Led by Stefan Thompson '13 and senior Richie Bonney, who were both tabbed ECAC Upstate All-Stars as well as NABC All-East selections, Hobart finished the regular season with a school record 13-game winning streak and a record 12 straight victories at home. The Statesmen earned the program's third NCAA tournament bid. In addition, Thompson became the first basketball player in Hobart history to be named an NABC All-American.

Off the court, the Statesmen placed five players on the Liberty League All-Academic Team, including Bonney, who also garnered Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-America first team honors.

The award is named in memory of Sam Schoenfeld, a former college basketball great who possessed a great deal of energy, impeccable honesty and a charismatic personality. One of the CBOA's founding members, he espoused integrity and strong character. The Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award is presented to the college or university which, in the judgment of the CBOA membership, best exemplifies the highest degree of sportsmanship, character and ethics among its players, coaches and spectators.
