Blair Dector ‘15 is spending her summer on the West Coast working as an intern at ABC studios, a division of Disney/ABC Television Group located in Burbank, Calif. She is working in the production management department, learning the ins and outs of the industry.
Under the tutelage of the executive producers, a typical day for Dector includes conducting inventory, scheduling appointments, observing meetings, assisting with the coordination of daily tasks, and reviewing studio material.
"As one of the premiere television networks in this country and around the world, I felt that Disney/ABC studios would expose me to a variety of occupations in a diversified company," says Dector, a dual major in media and society and studio art. "This opportunity will enable me to gain firsthand knowledge as to how television shows are produced from scripting through post production."
On campus, Dector is involved in a number of clubs and activities that enrich what she has learned in the classroom. She works as a web editor for the Herald, is a member of the media club and Latin America organization, and is part of the Arts Collective. She notes that the range of experience she has accumulated at HWS has played a key role in her professional development.
"My liberal arts education at HWS has exposed me to many different subjects, all of which I have been able to draw upon in undertaking my responsibilities as an intern at Disney/ABC studios," she says. "As I have learned, production of film and television involves so much more than just the ability to communicate. Not only are analytical skills important, but social and interpersonal skills are equally as vital. Moreover, knowledge of a broad spectrum of subjects gives one the ability to think outside the box in a corporate setting."
