Two Statesmen Named All-Americans

Posted on Thursday, July 25, 2013

D3football.com, the premier website for all things related to NCAA Division III football, released its annual preseason All-America teams yesterday. Hobart College, which is ranked No. 7 in the website's preseason poll, placed senior linebacker Devin Worthington and junior defensive end Tyre Coleman on the first team.

Both players were named to the 2012 D3football.com All-America teams, Coleman a first team selection and Worthington a second teamer, after leading Hobart to a 12-1 record and the school's first appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. The 2012 Statesmen were fifth in the nation in total defense (241.0 yds/g), seventh in passing defense (143.23 yds/g), 10th in sacks (3.31/g), and 22nd in rushing defense (97.77 yds/g).

A devastating pass rushing tandem, Coleman and Worthington have terrorized quarterbacks and given offensive linemen fits. Coleman begins his third season with the Statesmen just 2.5 sacks shy of Dave Russell's 16-year-old career record (33.0-30.5) with Worthington 3.5 behind Coleman.

The duo is also chasing down the career tackle for loss record of 59.0 set by Rob Gould. Worthington leads that race with 52.0 over the past three seasons while Coleman has 49.5.

Coleman has now been named to four preseason All-America first teams this year, earning additional accolades from Lindy's Sports Annuals, The Sporting News, and Beyond Sports Network (BSN). He is coming off a monster sophomore campaign that saw him break the Hobart season records for tackles for loss with 30.5 (3rd in the nation) and sacks with 17.5 (4th in the nation). The Statesmen's top returning tackler, he was second on the team last year with 67 stops.

Coleman also broke the Hobart game records for sacks with 4.5 at Utica and tackles for loss with 5.0 against Union in 2012. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year by the Liberty League and D3football.com East Region.

Worthington has been named to three preseason All-America teams, gaining first team honors from BSN and second team honors from Lindy's. He recorded 52 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks last season. Worthington recorded a season-high eight tackles against St. Lawrence and produced a pair of interceptions at Rensselaer off of current San Diego Chargers' quarterback Mike Hermann.

Worthington broke the Hobart game record for tackles for loss with 4.5 against Geneva College, only to see Coleman tie the mark the following week and break it five weeks after that. Worthington is a three-time first team All-Liberty League selection and a three-time All-East pick by D3football.com.

Hobart begins its 120th varsity season at Dickinson on Saturday, September 7. Kickoff in Carlisle, Pa., is scheduled for noon. The Statesmen return 35 lettermen, including 13 starters, from last year's team that secured the Liberty League championship with an unblemished 7-0 record.
