The William Smith U23 Development Camp competed in the Independence Day Regatta on the Schuylkil River July 5-7 in Philadelphia. Following her success at the U23 World Championship Trials, Heron rower Libby Hughes '14 paired with teammate Alyssa Trebilcock' 14 in the intermediate 2x, Sinead Reilly '14 also competed in the 2x and Morgan Burgess '15 rowed in the intermediate lightweight 1x.
On the first day of racing, Hughes and Trebilcock mastered a very heavy headwind to finish fifth in the time trial, earning a spot in the semifinal with a time of 8:12.94. Reilly and Shelby Curren (Stetson University) posted a time of 8:57.47 and finished 18th out of 22 entries and did not advance.
"For Hughes and Trebilcock to advance in such adverse conditions is a credit to their efficiency and strength to weight ratio," said William Smith Head Coach Sandra Chu. "As lightweights in an openweight field, their success was not a given. They raced aggressively to earn their berth."
Burgess finished fourth in her heat with a time of 11:38.58 in the intermediate lightweight 1x and did not advance.
On Saturday, Hughes and Trebilcock progressed again, finishing third in their semifinal, earning one of six spots in the grand final.
In the grand final, Trebilcock and Hughes placed sixth out of six. Their time of 8:23.4 was 31 seconds off the winning pace.
"These two were the bow pair of the William Smith varsity eight this year," Chu said. "They row well together and have clearly leveraged that to perform in such a competitive field. I'm looking forward to seeing what they accomplish at Club Nationals next week."
The William Smith Development Camp will race in the 2013 USRowing Club National Championships July 10-14, in Camden, N.J.
