Three William Smith College sailors were honored at the annual Heron Athletics Awards Banquet. Seniors Bridget Nannig and Catherine Pelo shared the Ady Symonds '96 Most Valuable Sailing Award and first-year Megan Barden received the Christine Jurczak '00 Coach's Award.
Nannig earned All-MAISA crew and ICSA All-America crew honors this season. She competed in seven ICSA championships during her collegiate career, including this year's team race and coed dinghy regattas. Nannig sailed in A Division to help the Colleges finish third in the ICSA Coed Dinghy Western Semifinal. She placed second in A Division at both the Truxtum Umsted and the America Trophy, the MAISA Coed Dinghy Championship. Nannig also represented HWS in the Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Team Race Championship. The Colleges finished fourth in that regatta, qualifying for the ICSA Team Race National Championship.
Nannig also won the Symonds Award last season.
Pelo garnered All-MAISA crew recognition this season. She competed in seven ICSA championships during her collegiate career, including this year's women's dinghy, team race, and coed dinghy regattas. Pelo shined at the Admiral Moore Team Race and at the Prosser Trophy this spring. Her efforts pushed HWS to first place on Day 1 of the Admiral Moore Team race with an 11-2 record. The Colleges then picked up six more wins on Day 2 to secure the victory. At the Prosser Trophy, Pelo led the Colleges to a fourth place finish.
Pelo won the Jurczak Award as a sophomore and earned ICSA All-America crew honors as a junior.
Barden enjoyed a successful rookie campaign. She turned in her most dominant performance of the year in the Fall North No. 1 regatta, winning six of the weekend's 15 races to finish first in A Division and help the Colleges to a second place finish in the regatta. Barden won A Division in the MAISA Fall Open, helping HWS to the regatta victory. She also finished second in A Division in her collegiate debut at the Cornell Fall Open.
Both the Symonds and Jurczak awards are voted on by the members of the team.
The Hobart and William Smith sailing teams qualified for all three ICSA spring national championship regattas. HWS placed ninth in the team race championship and 16th in the coed dinghy championship. William Smith finished 14th in the women's dinghy championship. The Colleges have appeared in three straight team race national championship regattas and 11 consecutive coed dinghy championships.
