Herons Finish Regular Season

The William Smith College lacrosse team won their third straight game to finish out the regular season, topping Skidmore 13-8 in a Liberty League contest played on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. Senior Kathleen Ragan led the Herons with four points on three goals and an assist.
William Smith is 10-6 overall and a 7-2 in the Liberty League. The Herons have earned the No. 3 seed in the Liberty League tournament, and will meet No. 2 seed St. Lawrence on Friday, May 3. Rensselaer secured the No. 1 seed and right to host the tournament. Vassar is the No. 4 seed.
In their final regular season home game on Boswell Field, senior Marissa Potter recorded three goals, senior Katie Dexter won a game-high five draws, and senior Liz Seidel recorded a game-high four ground balls and scored her first goal of the season. Along with her four points, Ragan added two caused turnovers. First-year Hannah Connolly produced three goals. Sophomore Katie Sipple registered a goal and two assists and classmate Abbie West notched two goals. Sophomore Rachel Hughes came away with four draws. First-year Marina Guigli played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves. She also picked up three ground balls.
The Thoroughbreds finished their season with a 3-13 overall record and a 2-7 mark in conference play. Robin Fetterolf led the team with three goals and three ground balls. Spencer Morgan added a goal and won a team-high four draws. Shelby Witheford played all 60 minutes in goal and stopped seven shots.
Connolly started the scoring for the Herons with a goal off a feed from Sipple at 1:28. Just 10 seconds later, Brittney Dioneda tied the game at one for the Thoroughbreds. William Smith then put together a three-goal run with unassisted tallies by Ragan, Potter and Sipple, to take a 4-1 lead. Morgan found the back, followed by a goal by Fetterolf to get Skidmore within one with 8:41 left in the first half. With 59 seconds left on the clock, Ragan sent home a shot to give the Herons a 5-3 lead at the break.
West scored the first two goals of the second half and Ragan took advantage of a free position to stretch the William Smith lead to 8-3. At 13:13, Anna Gubbins found Lexi Melville, who chipped in the Thoroughbreds' fourth goal. Just under two minutes later, Seidel scored her first goal of the season on a diving shot to make it 9-4. Emma Harris logged an unassisted tally for Skidmore 30 seconds later, but William Smith put together another 3-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. Unassisted tallies by Potter and Connolly were followed by another Potter goal, this time off a Ragan assist to put the Herons up by seven. Skidmore answered with a 3-0 run of their own on two goals by Fetterolf and an unassisted tally by Caroline Bowne to make it 12-8 with 5:57 remaining. Connolly chipped in the final goal of the game with 38 seconds left on the clock.
The Herons enjoyed a 20-16 advantage in shots, a 14-11 edge in ground balls and a 13-10 lead in draws. William Smith was successful on 16-of-19 clear attempts, while Skidmore went 14-for-17.
