HWS Joins Languages Colloquium

Posted on Thursday, April 25, 2013

Assistant Professor of Spanish and Hispanic Fernando Rodríguez-Mansilla and Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish and Hispanic Studies Carlos Villacorta recently presented at the "Visual Manifestations of Cultural Intersections: A Modern Languages Colloquium," held at Siena College, in Albany, N.Y.

Sponsored by Sienna's Department of Modern Languages and Classics, the colloquium examined how images can teach us about cultural exchanges within the frame of language studies. The event welcomed scholars from across the region and featured keynote speaker Leyla Rouhi, the John B. McCoy and John T. McCoy Professor of Romance Languages at Williams College.

In his presentation, Rodríguez-Mansilla discussed his paper on "Engravings in Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's Works." His work delved into the interaction of iconography and text in Inca Garcilaso's works as an example of how printing, image and writing converged in Spanish Golden Age cultural production.

Villacorta presented his work, "From Palestine to Barbarie: The Graphic Novel as a Representation of War," an examination of war in graphic novels "Palestine," by Joe Sacco, and "Barbarie: Cómics sobre violencia política en el Perú, 1985-1990," by Jesus Cossio, which details political violence in Peru during the 1980s.
