Spanish Teaching Fellows Sessions
Posted on Friday, March 15, 2013
The Spanish and Hispanic studies department recently celebrated the teaching fellows in the department with a fiesta, featuring Spanish dancing, music, food and conversation. The event was held to recognize the important role the fellows play in the student-teacher relationship.
Assistant Professor of Spanish and Hispanic Studies Fernando Rodriguez-Mansilla, who serves as a departmental faculty liaison to the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), praises the fellows for their "enthusiasm and hard work."
For the past four years, the CTL has run the Teaching Fellows Program, which strives to provide students with an inclusive, collaborative environment that promotes learning. The CTL supports Teaching Fellows in nine departments across campus, including the Spanish and Hispanic Studies department.
The Spanish teaching fellows are available to aid students with language skills, review course material and provide assistance for written assignments. Students may meet with the teaching fellows in order to enhance their conversational skills before studying abroad, or simply to participate in the cooperative environment. The Spanish teaching fellows hold sessions in Smith Hall 206 every Sunday through Thursday, between 7 and 10 p.m. Students of all abilities and course levels are welcome to attend these sessions. Individual review sessions may also be scheduled throughout the semester.
The Teaching Fellows Program aims to create a community of engaged learning in order to encourage a supportive educational atmosphere on campus. Teaching Fellows are nominated by faculty within the department they serve and have the ability to facilitate student learning outside the classroom. The program focuses on learning with and from other students, as well as encouraging student-faculty academic interaction in order to enhance course learning and understanding.
